My approach

My approach to counselling:

I help people to help themselves. My integrated counselling is based on the  methods of person-centred counselling, which understands that each person aims to improve their own well-being in their own manner. I also integrate other methods that will help each client in the best way, including Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, NLP, Positive Therapy, and other methodologies. I blend those different methods in counselling sessions to provide the most appropriate  methods for each client.

I tailor each session to each client. The counselling sessions are theirs. I invite clients to  disclose any preferences that they have, as well as any types of counselling that they may not wish to engage in. Some people have previous experiences of counselling and realise what was most effective for them. All people are different, clients bring their varied problems and issues to my counselling practise, where I work with all clients as seperate individuals.

I realise that clients have "ups and downs".  Counselling can be  challenging in many ways, there will  be days when the challenge is easier to focus on than others. I understand those differences and work with them.

Focusing on the present and the future and what you want in your life forms a large part of my counselling.

We live in the present. This is the time for the enjoyment of "the now". The past has happened; it can only be an experience and  a memory. If a desired future is affected by past events and experiences, we can work towards understanding those past events and how they may be affecting current behaviours and emotions.

The future can be changed from what it might have been; the past is fixed - it has happened. Acceptance of the past can be important. The past can provide 'lessons' of experiences, which can be useful in the future.

I work with the belief that people can attain and maintain autonomy over their lives, enabling them to make their best decisions for themselves - not feeling that they should bounce from one problem to the next, either their own or of others.

Counselling will help you to understand the underlying reasons why you may be using negative thoughts and behavior which you may have learnt in the past - some of which are not useful or appropriate in the present. It will also give ideas of the more enjoyable life that may be available.

Counselling brings awareness, reality and knowledge to anger, confusion, anxiety and depression. It can be fun and laughter, joy, understanding, bringing a sense of knowledge and clarity to problems which may have built up over a long time. It can also be hard mental effort, working towards a better appreciation of your current situation and a future way of living in this wonderful world.

Mental conflict of any kind can often be helped by understanding where it originated. Realising how past problems are really affecting you now, and why, can enable real solutions to real issues. If you are living your current life according to rules or habits which originated a long time ago, you may be unknowingly discontent with the result.

Understanding a problem may be the solution just by itself. Working with that understanding, with clarity and reality, to bring a new viewpoint to life can  be the big improvement you wish.
